DLR GfR mbH is a company providing reliable, safe and secure aerospace services. We operate and manage the constellation of Galileo satellites in the Galileo Control Center (GCC) Oberpfaffenhofen on behalf of the European Commission.

YOUR MISSION:

For the Galileo Ground Segment Maintenance Engineering we need you to support our Level 1 IT team, which plays a core role on the performance of our Galileo mission. You will be responsible for troubleshooting Galileo’s IT platform to guarantee the reliability and availability of our complex satellite ground control system at hardware and software levels (i.e. customized server/switch/firewall architecture solutions). We are looking for an IT engineer or IT specialist motivated to learn continuously, who is flexible and enjoys working in a hands-on environment, who likes to take on new projects and solve problems. A successful candidate for this role will have strong organizational skills complementing the technical skills.
Alongside solid technical expertise, you should be capable of understanding problems, recognizing patterns, processing complex information quickly to make decisions, and find solutions. 
Confidentiality, integrity, and the ability to adhere to strict security policies are essential.
 
Your responsibilities:
  • Maintenance and Administration of the IT platform (Unix and Windows) of the Ground Control and Mission Segments for the 24/7 Galileo mission (preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of unexpected technical issues)
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues, escalating complex problems to Level 2 and 3 support teams
  • Administration of user and root accounts on the elements
  • Restoration and verification of new / replaced components in the Galileo ground segment
  • Validation and execution of maintenance procedures for GCC hardware and software used 
  • Optimization of maintenance procedures for the Ground Control and Mission Segment systems based on existing documentation
  • Performing system tests including interface tests based on defined procedures
  • Documentation of the work and configurations in a ticket system
  • Participation in coordination meetings and representation of the company’s interests to customers
  • Regular on-call duty (weekly basis) after an intensive training period 

YOUR QUALIFICATION:

  • Completed university degree in technical or scientific engineering fields, such as computer science, telecommunications, business informatics, etc., or comparable education, e.g., as an IT specialist for system integration, for digital networking, or for data and process analysis
  • Solid knowledge of various operating systems such as Linux and Windows (Server)
  • Basic Linux skills and proficient use of the command line (Shell)
  • Understanding of network protocols and database systems
  • Experience in system/network engineering and administration is advantageous
  • Experience in server infrastructure maintenance (hardware, virtualization) is advantageous
  • Knowledge of ITIL processes and project management is advantageous
  • Knowledge of Galileo or other navigation ground segment is advantageous
  • Team orientation and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with other team members
  • Availability to support on-call service and occasional travel to other Galileo sites
  • Willingness to adhere to strict security policies and regulations
  • Fluent written and spoken English is mandatory
  • German or Italian knowledge is an advantage
